Anaglyph 3D was the earliest method of presenting theatrical 3D, which utilize the visual difference and convergence of two eyes to produce the 3D effect. In an anaglyph, the two images are superimposed in an additive light setting through two filters like red and cyan. In a subtractive light setting, the two images are printed in the same complementary colors on white paper. Glasses with colored filters in each eye separate the appropriate images by canceling the filter color out and rendering the complementary color black.
Therefore, what you need while you watching the anaglyph 3D video is a pair of archetypical 3D glasses. The anaglyph 3D video can be played on common TV, the common computer monitors, and even the common portable devices. They were made popular because of the ease of their production and exhibition. This technology has the simple image-forming principle as well as low cost. However, the image frame is also the worst.

Side by Side 3D
Side by Side 3D is now regarded as the best polarizing 3D video, in which a full 1080p or 720p frame consists of two halves on the left and right, with the entire frame for the left eye scaled down horizontally to fit the left-half of the frame, and the entire frame for the right eye scaled down horizontally to fit the right side of the frame. It means that in a side by side 3D, one frame is intended for both eyes at the same time. The frame is split vertically in two parts: left part is intended for the left eye, right part for the right one, so that each of the eye receives image which is horizontally downsized in half.
When the 3D ready TV receives the side-by-side 3D signal, it splits each frame to extract the frame for each eye and rescales these individual frames to a full HD resolution using upscaling algorithms. Then it displays these upscaled individual frames alternately in a frame-sequential manner.
There are mainly two modes of Side by Side 3D: Full Side by Side and Half Side by Side 3D. We can see the difference between Full Side by Side 3D and Half Side by Side 3D with the following example.
Here is a 1920*1080 resolution HD video. If we choose the Full Side by Side 3D, the frame resolution of output video for each eye is 1920*1080. That's to say the resolution of the output video is 3840*1080. The size of Full Side by Side is large. To make the output video smaller, Half Side by Side 3D can compress the horizontal resolution to half of the original one, which means the frame resolution of the output video for each eye is 960*1080 and the resolution of the whole output video is 1920*1080.
Top and Bottom 3D
Just as the Side by Side 3D, in Top and Bottom 3D a full frame is also includes two halves on the upper and below, which means both the left eye and right eye information occupy the same video frame, with left eye information on top and right eye information below. There are also two mode of Top and Bottom 3D: Full Top and Bottom 3D and Half Top and Bottom 3D.The difference between them can be well understand with the difference between Full Side by Side 3D and Half Side by Side 3D.
The Side by Side 3D and Top and Bottom 3D has the much better visual effect than Anaglyph 3D. The assorted 3D glasses is necessary when you watch the Side by Side and Top and Bottom 3D.
